Export Certificate
If you are leaving PNG for a short time and you are taking out with you articles of a high value such as laptops, camera, jewelry, etc. on which either duty had already been paid, be sure to make a voluntary declaration at the time of your departure for you to get an Export Certificate. The Customs Officer will examine the items and certify that the listed goods are being taken out of PNG by you. You are also required to declare and complete Cross-Border Movement of Currency and Valuables (CMCV) Forms, if you’re exporting currency worth more than K20, 000.00.
Keep the "Export Certificate" safe with you and when you return to PNG, show the certificate to the Customs Officer, who will then admit these articles free of duty, provided they have not undergone any changes or modification.
The advantage of obtaining the "Export Certificate"; is that general concessions you are entitled to when you return, will not be affected, providing all the particulars of the items agree with the "Export Certificate".
The 'Export Certificate' does not apply to goods purchased duty free in Papua New Guinea at the time of your departure or goods taken out for repair and return.
The export of alluvial or unworked Gold is not permitted except through a licensed Gold Exporter on permit. The Penalties for smuggling gold include forfeiture, a fine and imprisonment.
Export Permits
Please note carefully that the possession and export, or attempted export of narcotics from PNG is prohibited or restricted under different laws of the National Government. Offenders face heavy penalties including imprisonment.
The possession and export, or attempted to export, of certain types of firearms/weapons such as spring-bladed knives, daggers, swordsticks, knuckledusters, firearms including air, gas, flare, spear and starting signal pistols or guns is restricted and must always be declared. Release is subject to the approval of Police Authorities who must issue an export permit. The importation of such items into other countries may also be restricted or prohibited and you are advised to check the requirements of the country that you intend to visit.
All such articles, following clearance for export must not be carried in the passenger cabin of an aircraft or vessel but should be packed and carried in the freight or hold area of the aircraft or vessel. Because of security restrictions please do not carry them on your person or in your hand baggage.

Travellers to Papua New Guinea should make enquiries with the National Museum before buying such items, which include World War 2 relics. Local handicrafts are generally not considered cultural heritage items but care should be taken when making such purchases.
Unworked or alluvial gold can only be exported by licensed dealers. Travellers to Papua New Guinea should be aware that any attempt by you to export such gold is unlawful and if detected the gold will be seized and you may be prosecuted.
Obscene material such as pictures, pornographic movies, or any other undesirable literature in violation of public decency and integrity of the Government of Papua New Guinea is a prohibited export. The importation of such material into other countries may also be restricted or prohibited and you are advised to check the requirements of the country that you intend to visit.

If you require medicines containing habit forming drugs or narcotics (eg, diuretics, depressants, stimulants, heart drugs, tranquillisers, sleeping pills) you should:
- Have a prescription from your physician advising that the medicine is being used under a doctor's direction and is necessary for your physical well being; and
- Carry the drugs in their original containers.
